Soft-Rock
Le soft-rock est un terme à géométrie variable et parfois galvaudé du fait qu'il a pu avoir des significations différentes selon les périodes. Toutefois, de façon générale, tous ces différents courants ont un fil conducteur : une musique apaisée, mélodique, qui prend l'exact contre-pied du hard rock. Le soft-rock est plus assimilable à de la pop qu'à du rock. Toutefois, contrairement à la pop de l'époque pré-rock'n'roll, les racines du soft-rock se trouvent bel et bien dans le rock, même si dans une version accessible à un grand public dont les radios ont souvent raffolé.
On emploie souvent divers synonymes (plus ou moins exacts) pour qualifier ce genre musical : il fait donc souvent parti du FM Rock ou Album Rock, et parfois à tort west coast rock car le soft-rock n'est pas l'apanage de la scène californienne. Son univers est souvent proche de celui du jazz-rock fusion (voir du smooth jazz et de la soul contemporaine Quiet Storm) du fait qu'on retrouve souvent les mêmes musiciens de studio dans les deux genres et que certains membres de groupes de soft-rock s'avèrent être de très bons musiciens de jazz. Le soft-rock est aussi caractérisé par un état d'esprit "cool" et optimiste, qui tranche avec les thèmes contestataires et politiquement engagés de nombreux groupes de rock, ce qui sera à la fois une des raisons de son succès auprès du grand public et du mépris que les critiques de rock auront à son égard, le considérant comme commercial.
Le soft-rock est né au début des années 1970. Au départ, il désignait surtout une forme de folk-rock très axée sur la mélodie, moins "roots" et plus pop que le format d'origine. On compte parmi les premiers artistes du genre des groupes comme America, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Seals & Croft, Fleetwood Mac ou les Eagles ainsi que des auteurs-compositeurs-interprètes (songwriters, en anglais) tels que James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg ou Neil Young (bien qu'il soit impensable de mettre toute la discographie de ce dernier au compte du soft-rock, son très célèbre "Harvest" en est un des albums phares). En revanche, certains groupes comme Steely Dan ou Chicago ont fusionné le rock avec des sonorités jazz et funk, rendant l'équation soft-rock = folk-rock inexacte.
Des artistes anglais comme Elton John, Rod Stewart et d'autres venant de grands groupes britanniques, américains ou canadiens tombent exactement dans le genre, citons quelques exemples : (Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Sting, Phil Collins, Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Burton Cummings etc...).
De plus, avec l'arrivée de groupes utilisant des sonorités moins organiques comme le synthétiseur, le soft-rock va peu à peu s'éloigner définitivement de ses racines folk-rock, notamment avec des groupes comme Supertramp ou Toto. Ironiquement, beaucoup de groupes soft-rock comptent dans leur répertoire des titres avoisinant le hard-rock (c'est le cas de "Life In The Fast Lane" des Eagles par exemple) et l'inverse est d'ailleurs vrai (Led Zeppelin, par exemple, a fait de nombreux titres soft-rock). Enfin, d'une certaine façon, et c'est sûrement pour cette raison que ce genre est très controversé et n'a jamais eu le respect des critiques rock, le soft-rock a jeté les bases de la pop "adult contemporary", c'est-à-dire la variété anglo-saxonne telle que nous la connaissons aujourd'hui à travers les Phil Collins et autre Bryan Adams. On doit cela à des artistes comme Christopher Cross. Cependant, le soft-rock et l'Adult Contemporary sont bien deux genres distincts.
